Fun in the Sun – Full Day Sandwich Harbour Tour
The Tour: The Sandwich Harbour Tour is a very informative activity on the Namibian coast, also known as the Skeleton Coast. The tour takes a closer look at the Little Creatures living in the desert and allows for the opportunity to Sand Board down the Namib Dunes. At Sandwich Harbour, where the Desert meets the Ocean, here the mighty Atlantic Rollers kiss the endless Namib Sea of Sand. It is a breathtaking landscape that is not likely to be matched anywhere else. The tour is topped off with an exciting 4×4 Dune-Drive.
Through-out the day there will be ample time to learn about the vegetation and how the dunes came to be so high and mighty.
There will be time to do some Sand Boarding should you dare. Since we are in the dunes with our 4×4 vehicles we will take the Sand Boarders to the top of the dune in our vehicle and will collect them again after their ride to do it all over again, saving the Sand Boarders the effort to climb the dune on foot.
Due to the nature of the route we will have some exhilarating drives up and down the dunes with stops at viewpoints offering scenes of the Dunes and Ocean, a view only possible in Namibia. We also search for curious tracks on the sand. One of these tracks would be the winding tracks of the Namib Sidewinder Snake and also the Namib Horned Viper and follow the tracks to where the snake has found safe coverage in the sandy desert.
The Living Jewel of the Namib Desert is the transparent but still colorful Namib Sand Gecko or Web-footed Gecko. As the day carries on and the day heats up there are a number of Toktokkies or Fog-Basking Beetles that venture out to find food on the slopes of the dunes. We admire the Shovel-Snouted Lizard that performs a fascinating dance to tolerate the scorching hot sands.
Winding trough the dunes we will come across patches of vegetated gravel plains and among these scattered scrubs we search for the elusive Namaqua Chameleon.
There is a fine balance between the coastal tide and the desert wind. To find the small creatures that live in the Namib Desert, you have to find the faint tell tale marks left in the sand by these little creatures before the wind covers it up, but to be able to reach Sandwich Harbour we have to cross the Kliene Wand. This is the section of the coast where the dunes towering right out of the ocean and it is only possible to cross this section when the tide is low.
The full day sandwich harbour tour allows your guide to plan the day in such a manner so as to maximize your sights and activities with no time pressure.
